www.fortpointarts.orgWinged & Whispered is an exhibit centered around the theme of birds, bugs, and other flying creatures by artists working in a variety of styles and mediums. The artists in this group either share imagery literally - as in creatures with wings; birds, butterflies, moths, insects, angels, etc., or imply the feeling of wings or flight through atmosphere, environment, lighting etc. Additionally, the works intersect under the umbrella of "poetic realism" as a group of works that convey a sense of magic, mystery and/or transformation that brings to mind visual poetry.
I fell in love with moths as a child, finding them like magical messengers drawn to our light from another realm, especially the ones that appeared suddenly out of complete darkness with their hidden flashes of color. The luna is perhaps the most astonishing, with its otherworldly hue, brief life span and rare appearances....Over the last two years I raised luna moths in a netted cage inside my studio's bay window; immersing myself with my subject in order to capture something of their mysterious poetry."

Dreaming The Light/Unfolding The Dark
"Dreaming The Light/Unfolding The Dark" is an exhibit featuring artists who use light and darkness to poetically evoke a wide range of feelings, ideas and experiences, literally and/or metaphorically through a variety of complementary styles and mediums.
The exhibiting group includes; sculptor Riyo Hirota, poet Jenny Grassl, and painters; Mary Armstrong, Elizabeth Awalt, Stoney Conley, and Tamara Krendel.
The title "Dreaming The Light/Unfolding the Dark" speaks to the creative process in which one illuminates something intangible, something unanticipated and mysterious which becomes revealed as art.
The dark represents a personal place, perhaps a sacred place of complete privacy, where one may go into oneself to discover or transform ones grief, loneliness and fear, as well as ones awe or exhilaration. The dark is a place inside the artists mind, soul and spirit and where the artist embarks on a journey seeking inspiration and vision and is uniquely transformed bringing out of this place of darkness the mysterious magic and poetry of creation.
Art unfolds the darkness, creating expressive imagery, words and sounds out of sorrow and longing, awe and wonder that can provide light, poetry, and transformation, acknowledge mystery, and offer solace in the face of loneliness and tragedy. It unfolds the dark, offering universal, spiritual and personal transcendence in many forms, including hope and solace, as well as dialogue, transformation and even escape; -inspiring, soothing, connecting, as well as compelling and provoking.

Some Notes about My Sketches of Lawrence currently on display at Gallery 181
Studies for The Essex Art Center’s Fresh Paint event
During The Essex Art Center’s Annual Gala Auction Fresh Paint, a group of artists are invited to complete a work of art in a single day, while working simultaneously from various locations throughout the city of Lawrence. Maps are provided, and the public is invited to observe the artists at work throughout the day. That evening, the freshly painted works are auctioned off at a gala fundraising event.
I have seven sets of studies of the factories and bridges along the Merrimack River. They are light and composition studies that I have done on location each year in anticipation of the Essex Art Center’s Annual Fresh Paint event. I have kept these sketches because I feel they capture the light and poetry of this scene and because they are my personal “journal” from an annual event in which I am very intensely invested and which I have to surrender a painting that I have spent eight or nine hours working on and only get to see in its finished state for a few hours, through rather bleary eyes—if that.
I work from the same location each year and each year I sketch and paint the scene completely anew. Reminiscent of my year studying the Northern Renaissance in Belgium and that area’s extraordinary light and infinite sky, much of what interests the landscape painter in me exists here in the magical enduring rugged beauty of Lawrence; the drama of changing waterways and low skylines set off against these eternal turn-of-the-century factory buildings and bridges
